east coast openings for 2008- 09 season?
« on: April 10, 2008, 07:31:22 PM »
Does anyone live/ride on the east coast? I'm wondering who opens up first? I'm trying to keep my trips within 300-400 miles from my home (Atlanta). But with gas prices being the way they are as of late I'm probably better off flying to wherever :D! Thanks for any info.

I used to live on the east coast.  Best seasons anywhere near you are Snowshoe, WV or Wisp, MD but those are over 500 miles from Atlanta.  Being down there, first to open are furthest away in Vermont.  But then, might as well fly.

Hey man Wintergreen (Virginia) has there opening date set for the 29th of November.  I know that's not primo but it should give you an idea of what to expect.

Jay Peak in northern VT usually fully opens in mid November but the exact date depends on the weather.  They historically get the most snow of any east coast resort.

on the lower east side its always www.cataloochee.com . its honestly what they're famous for.
its a small mountain, but they opened mid november when the rest of the resorts in the area
(even as far up as indiana) didnt open till almost christmas closing break.
for a good resort, go to perfect north www.perfectnorth.com its about an hour outside
of louisville and its REALLY pushing the 400 mile mark. im in nashville and you're about
3 hours south of me, and it takes me 3 hours to get there... so figure about 6 hours.
(though if you wanted to hang out and ride with the group of guys i ride with theres prolly
someone you could crash with half way, atleast thats  a plus).
paolipeaks.com is also about an hour away from louisville.
the differences are, paoli usually has really bad snow. its more like hail unless its mid
temps (30-40) but they have a technical park thats almost a quarter mile long.
perfect north has perfect snow, but their "beginner" jump is a 45ft kicker and they only really
believe in kink rails after christmas. but perfect north does have a special with hyatt hotels
in cincinnati that gets you 2 free lift tickets (for the $150 room fee...but tickets at p/n are 45
if you need nothing to rent, and 89 if you have to rent)
hope any of that helps. just stay away from ober gatlinburg.

lol  I was planning to try to go spend a day at Ober Gatlinburg during our usual family vacation to pigeon forge every year. I haven't heard anything about the place, but it almost seems to good to be true because of how far south it is compared to all the other places on the east coast. So what's the scoop on the place? overcrowded, poor snow quality?

"AVERAGE ANNUAL SNOWFALL    -  35 inches"
LOL, that's funny.  But on the flipside, they DO have 100% snowmaking and base elevation of 2,700 ft, so if they make snow in early Dec and have cold winters like the last few, the snow will stick around Mid-December through Early-March for some fun all winter.

I'm gonna give it a try. My family and I will be up there anyway for our annual getaway and no more often than I get to go riding I suppose it would be foolish to pass up the opportunity. Speaking of opportunities has anyone been to this place before?

http://www.cloudmont.com/

It's ridiculously close to Atlanta and I'm willing to believe I could get by with a few trips there without breaking the bank or getting a divorce lol.

snow in alabama?!?!!??!?! omg ahahahhaah.
i forgot there are a bunch of resorts in n/c thats not to bad of a ride for you.
sugar (i think its called) mountain is a pretty big resort. dunno about their openings or
terrain, never been.

the things ive heard about ober gatlinburg are hearsay, but i hear it enough to believe it.
ive heard you can ride there all year, because they put a matt you can ride or something.
but my sister and her fiance went this past winter to try out her new skis, and they wouldnt
let her ride her own equipment, they made her ride theirs due to lawsuits or something.

if you find a good one let me know!
though taking g/w's tax rebate to canada for a few days in whistler is a good idea too ;)

At Gatlinburg you have to put out a $300 deposit to rent a board for the day????????   I've never seen that extreme of a deposit before.....

thats insane! the most ive ever put down on a deposit was $50. most just hardcopy my
credit card incase something happens.

screw gatlinburg, just toss some laundry detergent on a steep grassy hill and have fun :)

man if it were true that you could only rent at ober then the experience probably would suck lol. I thought that the cloudmont resort in alabama seemed a bit humorous too. The slope side cabin rentals are only 75 bucks a night for crying out loud lol. I've been to sugar mountain twice now and I like it ( it's actually the only place I've ever been so I wouldn't know any difference ). I suppose cataloochee will be the only other alternative for me that's within driving distance.

speaking of indoor venues, check out this ridiculously long, yet interesting article about proposed projects in atlanta.

I'll be in my 50's by the time it happens I"m sure lol.

Man I had no idea that we had this many east coasters on here.  Maybe we should plan a get together for next season, who knows maybe Frosty would even fly out.
