Spinning frontside
« on: February 20, 2009, 08:00:23 PM »
Hey
So I am getting pretty comfortable with bs 180s(uber fun).
But i cant fs 180 for my life.  Its like half way through its like hitting a brick wall and i cant spin anymore ( i had a nasty fall like tat lol).  I feel like once i spin i feel like once i get to that half way point i just wanna come down on my heel edgel.  Like that ll be the way im leening basically.
And I just cant imagin it in my   head at all (i guess cuz ive never done it lol).  But with a BS 180 like right now i can just image poppin of the toes a lil gettin a nice rotation and landing and everything.  I just cant do that at all with fs.
Some info:  i ride regular, forward leen is f2 (i have the burton dial flad - does anyone know what angles f2 actually equals lol), hmm what else, stance is like shoulder width almost i actually made it bigger a lil while ago and had to relearn how to turn haha.  Thats about it tell me if you need a deaper description - i think it really just comes down to me feeling like i wanna fall on my but once im spinning cuz im kinda leaning that way.

Thanks in advance for any tips

Try popin these front-side 180's just on flat ground (not moving) at first.  You are right, front-side spins usually start on heels.  That's probably the weirdest thing about them.  To me, the rest is easy.

There are many ways to perform frontside spins, here is one way that may help get you going:

Start with your arms wound up behind you (back arm behind your back foot and front arm over your front knee) and lower body squatted down moderately.  When ready, begin to extend your knees, boosting upward.  While extending, open your shoulders, arms helping lift up and rotating clockwise.  As you leave your heels, your upper body is almost fully rotated.  After in the air, pull your lower body around and land in balance with everything all back in alignment.

Once you get these, try it while moving down the trail, then try off of jumps!

Frosty's advice is golden. from the sounds of your troubles its either all in your head as in you cant
mentally picture it..which will cause you to fall, or you're opening up too early. Try holding your wind
up through the landing. It will probably over rotate you on the ground, but you can always toeside
correct and spin back to riding regular instead of switch.

If its mental, just know the moment you drop in that you're going to land it. Dont think twice, dont think
what if, just know. This will also start preparing you mentally for things above 5's. When you go for 7's
and above, you loose your orientation so easy it gets scary, so you just have to know and have faith
that when you leave the kicker you ARE going to land it. You'd be surprised how much that helps.
When I'm learning a new trick I just automatically mentally picture myself going through the body
movements and stomping the landing. I've gotten to where I dont even imagine falling, and that takes
alot off of your stress. It helps you focus.  Take that in with the rotation techniques Frosty said and
you'll be f/s in no time. Just dont forget your b/s skills!
