« on: March 04, 2009, 09:27:40 AM »
Frosty-

I dont know if we even have a half pipe on the east coast but I'm going to
Tahoe on March 20th and i need instructions.

Frosty, or anyone else, give me tips on a 1st timer on a pipe.
I can ride a skateboard half pipe, i just need to know the snowboard
side.

Riding a halfpipe takes a lot of practice.  At first ride it as if it were a natural feature.  No need to take air at first, just ride to the top of the wall and down through the transition with flow.  Try to maintain a constant speed.  Remember a flatter base will ride faster than on edge.  Just like in skating, if the lip is vert do not boost off it lest you land flat in the center which can ruin your day.

Awesome i wanted to know how much the ride was like a skateboard on a half. i dont expect
to air out on the 1st day at all (i have 2 full weekdays, the kids will be in school so ill have
the pipe to myself, to ride this...its the only thing im going to ride).

Ive been workin in the living room trying to figure out my run on how to stay toeside the
entire length of the pipe because thats my stronger side, so atleast i have my run planned
for the trip :)

how much pipe experience do you have? the only trick i want to do is a method which i
can easily do off of any ramp feature...how will this differ in a pipe verses say... a hip. and
i know a hip landing is not vert, but the execution is more what im wondering about.

thanks man!

Pipe/park is not my specialty, but i have over 16 years experience doing it.  It is different than skateboarding mainly because every snowboard halfpipe is different and the best way to ride it will change due to conditions of the day.  When you first start you will feel like riding with high edge angle, but be assured that is not the best way to go since most of the time you will be wanting to GAIN momentum.  You can "pump" like in skateboarding, but usually is is not necessary.  Just try to ride the walls with a nice arching turn and keep speed up.  Then eventually ride higher and higher on the wall until you are airing out.

I personally find methods really tough in the pipe.  Something about being face down like that (for backside hit frontside air) that is just spooky.  I like to do indies and lots of spins, slides or stalls, but that is probably from my strong freeride background.

Good luck!

thanks for the info bro! i can understand the spookyness of the method completely, but
its the trick i have the most confidence in. and im used to the face down from skateboarding
a half pipe, so hopefully it'll just be the riding ill be learning, and my method wont change.

i saw this picture online of the most gorgeous method i had ever seen, and it was in a
pipe, so i want to try to recreate it...ill have a professional photographer with me that
day, so maybe ill have a pic to back up my sponsorship application ;)

and thanks rowan! remind me when we team up to teach you a method ;)
