I was out this weekend taking a gander at the new decks available (at R.E.I.) and noticed some really interesting stuff. Firstly, most all of the boards are "rockers" and it made me wonder, "Does everybody really want/need Rocker snowboards?" I don't know, that will be another discussion thread.
Another thing I noticed was the variation in pricing of new snowboards. All over the place from $250 to over $600 dollars!
A nice variety of features like Power Grip, Magne Traction, all the stupid Burton slot binding technology and stuff like that.
However, the thing that impressed me the most was purely cosmetic but totally shocking indeed. It seemed like about half of the boards contained graphics containing Illuminati, Satanic, and New World Order references. Could this be an intentional campaign by TPTB to infiltrate the youth culture via the cool/edgy and influential force that is snowboarding?
It very well could be? Now some may say, "Frosty, there has always been edgy graphics displayed on the snowboards way back since, and adapted from, old-school skateboards." The bad-boy image pervades.
Yes, I concede to that, but there is a very important difference between the retro skateboards with the daggers, tattoo style skulls, flames, graffiti font, etc... and what is being put out today on snowboards.
Above we have the previously mentioned design staples of old-school skating. Dark imagery, blood, sharp
lines, etc ... Very cool. These kinds of graphics were loathed by parents and thus provided the youth of
the time the shelter of rebellion and counter-culture.
Remember this one? The classic Santa Cruz Screaming Hand. Considered sick by some and sick by others, depending on your definition of sick. (You can even get this design on a snowboard thanks to Santa Cruz http://www.santacruzsnowboards.com/index.php/Screaming_Hand.html )
Now, by contrast look at these modern graphics which never fail to include all-seeing eyes and creepy pyramids (nwo/big brother), Nazi SS (police state), and Skull & Bones (occult/Illuminati).
What really bothers me about many of these images is that so many of the symbols are hidden amongst other jumbled images. Others are really blatant. Maybe I'm just "board". Maybe I'm just off my rocker (so to speak) on this subject.
