- Tips on Choosing Snowboard Clothing (Layer Up)
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:02:09 AM »

As with any winter outdoor activity it is very important to make sure you are properly outfitted, and this is especially true in the case of snowboarding. In order to get pleasure from a day out on the snowy mountains you need to remain warm and dry. The more comfortable you are out there the more fun you will have. Your choice in clothing can be all the difference between a successful day  :D and a miserable one  .

Snowboard clothing is all a matter of layers.

Firstly there is the base layer. Cotton on this level is really not a good choice. Cotton soaks up moisture which unfortunately means that it will absorb your perspiration. It then becomes cold and wet and and you will feel damp, cold and unhappy. It goes without saying that this should be avoided so that you have an excellent snowboarding day.

The best sort of fabrics to wear against your body when snowboarding will wick moisture away from the skin (synthetic, silk, or merino wool). Polyester and polypropylene are good, affordable synthetic options. Your first layer should consist of long (moisture-wicking) underclothing, a long sleeved shirt and a pair of high socks. Do not double up on socks or they might wrinkle up or the elastic could get tight causing a situation that hinders blood flow and could end up being uncomfortable.

Next is the middle layer. The mid-layer is what will keeps you insulated against the cold air. Depending on the climate, either a jacket or vest can be worn. Man made fabric should also be worn on this layer.

The outer layer (on top) needs to be resilient and easy to wear. You'll need something that is strong enough to protect you from the wet snow and the wind (like gore-tex or other waterproof/breathable material), but it should also be comfortable enough to enable you to move around freely.

Snowboard pants come lightly insulated or non-insulated.  The fit is very important.  Most of these outerwear fabrics are not flexible, to you need to have enough room to move comfortably. It is a good idea to find pants with belt loops for your outer pant layer (or use suspenders). A whole lot of motion is required while snowboarding and if your trousers are not held firmly in place they can easily slip down. A simple belt or suspenders will keep your trousers secure, keep you dry, and prevent embarrassment from happening  :embarrassed: .  Snowboard Jackets like pants should fit loosely. I look for ones with lots of pockets and zipper vents for warm days.

Lastly, don't forget there are accessories and equipment. To protect your hands and to keep them warm make sure you purchase a good pair of gloves or mittens. To make sure you keep the heat in and wet out your jacket sleeves or shirt sleeves should be pulled over them. A helmet (or hat) is a good idea too in order to keep you warm and protected. Goggles are a good idea necessary to shield your eyes.

If you remember these tips for choosing the right snowboard clothing you will definitely have a fantastic time out on the mountains. You will stay dry and warm all through the day, even if you happen to fall down from time to time.
